The Deputy Prime Minister urged the 341 graduands of the National University of Samoa not to fear failure but to use it to overcome obstacles in their progress in life.

“To earn is divine, to fear is fatal,” Fonotoe Pierre Meredith told the graduands and hundreds of relatives and friends who thronged the NUS gymnasium at Papaigalagala, Wednesday,  4 April.

Fonotoe earned his baccalaureate  degree in the USA and his law degree from Otago University. He then worked for the Attorney General’s Department  for a number of years before being appointed Secretary of the Justice Department.

Later upon the death of his father, Lauofo Meti, he entered politics and was elected deputy Leader of the governing Human Rights Protection Party.

According to the Vice Chancellor and President of the National University of Samoa, Professor Fui Le’apai Tu’ua ‘Ilaoa Asofou So’o, this year’s graduation ceremony is a historical one, for it marks the first time the university has awarded postgraduate degrees.

These are the Master of Samoan Studies degrees awarded to Teleiai Christian Ausage and Tamari Mulitalo-Cheung, who studied part time while they were working as teachers at the Community College of American Samoa.

The Executive Officer of the ANU Pacific Manuscripts Bureau, Ms Kylie Moloney, visited the National University of Samoa library recently to microfilm old copies of The Samoa Times newspaper.

Ms Moloney, who heads the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau of the Australian National University, says her bureau has managed to microfilm old copies of The Samoa Times from the library of the University of Hawaii.

But she needed to microfilm new copies of the newspaper from 1992 and these were available only at the National University of Samoa library.

These were readily made available for her by the Chief Librarian of the NUS library, le tofa Avalogo Togi Aifa’i Tunupopo.

According to Ms Moloney, microfilm copies were preferable to photocopies because they lasted a long time, generally up to 300 years.

Ms Moloney, who began working for the bureau in 2008, has an extensive background in library, archives and museum work.
