HMG161 Management Practice
This course introduces the students to practical exercises relating to management issues.

Prerequisite(s): NIL

HMG162 Management, Organization and People
This course introduces the theories, functions and practices of management and organizations. The functional and behavioral aspects of management and organizations are emphasized. The course provides students with an appreciation of what is like to be part of an organization and a foundation for those who may, at some time, manage small or large organizations of various types.

Prerequisite(s): NIL

HMG202 Organizational Behavior
The basic design of this course puts together the student’s unique past and present experience with a range of ideas from the discipline of Organizational Behavior. As a result, we expect the students’ experience will help him/her make sense of the ideas and concepts that will help him/her make sense of his/her experience. The student will be expected to test his/her ideas against other people’s ideas and to engage in reflective learning.

HMG203 Industrial Relations
The course is designed to provide students with a body of knowledge of industrial relations theory. It provides an understanding of the relationship between the major actors in the New Zealand industrial relations system and in comparative study with Samoa will be undertaken. The course emphasizes an introduction to the skills necessary for involvement in industrial relations.

HMG204 Human Resource Management
As the title suggests, this course focuses upon the management of human resources in modern organizations. The course addresses the specific techniques that have been developed to facilitate the management of people, or in other words, how it is done. This includes different ways of recruiting, selecting and rewarding people at work. We also spend time considering the general psychological processes, which underline human behavior in organizations, the role of human resource management in competitive world economy and the propriety of the techniques of managing people that have been and are being developed.
It is important to remember that there is no single right way to manage or organize people – it is essentially a matter of personal judgment and personal values. As such, one of the major aims of a course such as this is to stimulate students to think about vital issues such as how employees, peers and superiors ought to be treated, how much freedom they ought to be given, how much control is justified, how much trust is reasonable.

HMG205 International Management
An introduction and brief analysis of the general features of the international management environment, including social, political, economic and technological contexts leading to an ability to understand a range of international settings and begin to manage successfully internationally. The Pacific Rim and Samoa’s main trading partnerships will be emphasized.

HMG206 Fundamentals of Operations Management
Operations Management is about managing people and resources in manufacturing firm or in a service industry. The course includes both service and manufacturing industries, including the government and health sector. Operations Management includes general management across all functions in a smaller company and the management of the operations functions in a larger company.
In this course students learn about the design, planning, control and improvement of operations management systems. Topics include operations strategy, product design, process design, planning and scheduling, capacity management, inventory management, material requirements planning, supply chain management and quality management.

HMG 361 Strategic Management
This course will encompass an overview of typical business activities across a range of disciplines. Students will develop a long term planning and strategic planning skills on a corporate basis. Topics covered will include environmental strategic analysis, new product/services development strategies, productions strategies and financial strategies together with execution and implementation activities.

Prerequisite(s): any 200- level management paper

HMG 362 Quality Management
This course will embrace the concepts of quality conforming to design and quality designed into products. Concepts of quality as currently applies, process of human resource development. Providing quality service and establishing quality assurance in all sectors with special reference to the purchasing and material/resources functions.

HMG 363 Management of Services
This course will highlight the importance of services management in a deregulated economy. The service sector plays a vital role in Samoa’s economy and development. Hence, traditional marketing of products does little justice to comprehend the rapid growth of this sector. Managing the service encounter would include service design and physical evidence, managing the human element, strategic market planning, making services accessible, building service quality, pricing and promotion of services and technology used in service delivery.

HMG 364 Performance Management
Performance Management is a broad course which focuses on ways of effectively managing employee performance through performance evaluation and compensation management. Fundamental to this process is a sound understanding of the theoretical formulation of both job analysis and design. An organisation’s compensation policies play a major role in its ability to attract and retain skilled and/or experienced employees, to motivate highly quality performance, and to support organisational strategic objectives. Performance evaluation or appraisal systems provide one of the major performance control mechanisms in an organisation, as well as impacting on motivation.

HMG 365 Managing Organisational Change
This course will commence with an overview of the various theories of organisations and the interrelatedness of the internal and external environments, structure, technology, size and function. The course will then cover the various approaches to both diagnosis and evaluation of organisational interventions. Case study exercises will be used to give students the opportunity to develop practical skills based on theoretical concepts learned in the course.
