The Certificate of Fitness Program is designed to offer students formal tertiary education combined with hands on technical and practical skills related to personal health and fitness. Technical skills related to the management of sport facilities, teams, events and organizations within the sport and fitness fields will be studied. The Certificate in Fitness is the first level in sports and fitness studies at NUS.

Diploma in Sports and Fitness
The diploma in sport and fitness is designed to offer students formal tertiary education combined with hands on technical and practical learning experiences in the disciplines of sport and exercise science as well as business. The diploma program is the second level in the sports and fitness studies at NUS providing further academic understanding and increased technical skills in the disciplines of coaching, exercise sciences, nutrition, exercise prescription, sport administration, management and marketing.

HSP100 Strength and Conditioning
This course will be a practical course in the principles and direct application of strength training using various modalities. Students will be required to participate in an on-going training program throughout the semester to gain hand on experience and knowledge in strength training, exercise modalities and basic fitness testing procedures. Application of sound physiological fitness principles will be applied throughout this course.

HSP101 Physical Activity and Health
This course is designed to introduce the students to the foundational principles of exercise and the science which underpins the application of exercise to the human body. Direct and applied practicals will be used throughout the course to teach students the fundamental principles of exercise science leading them through each principle of fitness as well as introducing them to the basics of session planning and designing basic training programs.

HSP102 Fitness and Coaching Leadership
This course will discuss the definitions and characteristics of teaching, mentoring, managing and coaching. The course will also cover the relationship between the athlete and effective coaching pedagogy in sport. Other topics covered include positive coaching environments, school and club management, athlete behavior and learning styles, fair play and coaching ethics. In addition, this course will analyze the essential qualities and skills of an effective leader/facilitator of physical activity programs. Topics included are group dynamics, the role of psychology in sport, motivation, adherence and goal setting.

HSP103 Introduction to Sport Management Practices
The aim of this course is to encourage the development of necessary and valuable management skills for baseline sport and fitness administrators. Major areas of discussion will include basic computer utilization, effective writing skills, basic budgeting practices, logistics and event planning, conducting meetings, interacting with the media and sponsorship processes.

HSP104 Anatomy and Physiology for Sport
This course will cover the basic knowledge of biological principles governing the human body and enable students to identify and explain the systems’ structure, function and how it relates to sport.

HSP105 Introduction to Sport Marketing
This course is to familiarize students with the marketing of sport services, sport teams and sport programs by examining consumer behavior in sport and the implications of that behavior for marketing practice.

HSP106 Foundations for Sport Management
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the field of sport management, including its concepts, principles, practices and issues. Students will be exposed to the development of management theories and the use of systems approach in relationship to a sport business environment. Problem solving, decision making, HRM ad operations management functions will be covered within sport organizations. External, regional and local case studies will be used. Other topics covered in this course include the PLOC model, organization structures, management theory, problem solving, leadership, interpersonal skills change, TQM, ethics and culture.

HSP107 Recreational Planning and Design
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Recreation and leisure as a nonstop industry with phenomenal growth, tremendous potential, and diverse career paths and options. This course presents historical, philosophical and social aspects of the industry; offers fresh insights to the standard treatment of community parks and recreation departments, youth and non-profit agencies, commercial recreation and tourism enterprises; describes how recreation provides fun, enriching and educational programs and services for people of all ages; encompasses a variety of services, including recreational sports, outdoor activities, fitness and wellness, and arts and culture; and exposes students to the variety of career options available and supports them as they explore their interests and prepare for challenging careers in one of the leading industries of the 21st century. International case studies are used, from Australia, USA, Europe and applied to the Samoan context.

HSP200 Promoting Physical Activity
The aim of this course is to examine concepts of physical activity by analyzing current programs in a variety of contexts and applying this knowledge in a practical environment. International, regional and local programs will be used with emphasis on internationally aided programs facilitated within Samoa, their intervention process and outcomes. Impacts of international and local physical activity programs will be analyzed through case studies, readings and experiential learning experiences.

HSP201 Sport and the Law
The aim of this course is to discuss selected topics relating to the interplay between the law and sports with an emphasis on areas of concern to those in administrative, coaching or athletic roles. To recognize and understand when legal principles are likely to apply to their area of expertise and whether assistance or advice is needed in those areas. Topics include: historical development, health and safety act, law of contract, fair trading act, sports disputes, players contracts and selection criteria.

HSP202 Sport Facility Management
The aim of this course is to encourage the development of necessary and valuable management skills for sports administrators. Major areas of discussion will include strategic planning, leadership, communication, finance and budgetary consideration, career considerations, risk management, facility management, management functions and information technology.

HSP203 Applied Sport Nutrition
The aim of this course is for students to develop sound knowledge of sport nutrition and the ability to apply this knowledge to the improvement of athletic performance for a chosen sport. Topics include optimal nutrition, nutrition for training and recovery, fluids and electrolytes, nutrition to maximize performance.

HSP204 Sport Injuries
This course introduces the students to an understanding of the biological and functional sequence of sports injury events. The student will understand the causes of injuries in sports, as well as consider strategies for prevention and management of injuries. Students will complete a comprehensive First Aid Certificate within this course.

HSP205 Exercise Psychology
This course is designed to introduce students to psychological principles relevant to performance in sport. They will develop an analytical attitude toward the application of psychological theory to sport using various models and frameworks. Students will also explore psychology of an athlete, casual exerciser and the non-compliant person through case study analysis and practicum exercises in the community. The course also aims to provide the student athlete with an integrated knowledge of the psychological requirements of elite sport.

HSP206 Business Sport Management
This course aims to examine the field of sport management, including its concepts, principles, practices and issues. Topics include planning, leading, organizing, controlling, organization structures, management theory, problem solving, leadership, interpersonal skills, human resource management, ethics and culture.

HSP207 Sport, Media and Society
This course aims at examining the historical ad social context of sport within the social and cultural environment of Samoa. International models will be examined to define the role and place sport has within multiple societies. The role and influence of the media will be explored in reference to its relationship with sport and its influences on women, children and people with disabilities. Topics include society and culture, play, games, sports, history of sport, contemporary issues in sport.

HSP208 Performance Skills
The aim of this course is to analyze the sport and exercise learning environment, characteristics of the learner and relevant learning theory as they relate to the acquisition of skilled movement. The students will have the opportunity to apply biomechanical tools to the improvement of sports techniques and injury prevention.
