The National University of Samoa School of Maritime Training is operating according to the International Maritime Organization Standards and Requirements for the Standards of Trainings and Certification for Seafarers Convention 1995.
The demanding tasks that we are facing during the fiscal year 2011 - 2015 are the strategies and plans to achieve the new amendments to the STCW 95 Convention approved by IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) in 2010 called Manila Amendments 2010.
The new STCW amendments will be enforced by 2012 with the grace period ended in 2015. Samoa needs to comply with the above international standards to maintain its status within the IMO White List and recognition of Samoan seafarers worldwide.
In the mean time, more than one hundred Samoan seafarers are working onboard foreign vessels overseas. The majority of those seafarers are employed by an Italian Shipping Company, the Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), onboard their Cruise Liners and Container Vessels operating between Europe and the Mediterranean, Caribbean Islands, South Africa, USA and South America. The Forum Samoa II currently operating between Australia and Asia is also manned by the local seafarers.
The Samoan Seafarer’s wages are paid according to ITF salary scale in which an ordinary seaman earns US$1,800/month.
